You have heard how it was said, You shall not commit adultery.
28 But I say this to you, if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 If your right eye should be your downfall, tear it out and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of yourself than to have your whole body thrown into hell.
30 And if your right hand should be your downfall, cut it off and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of yourself than to have your whole body go to hell.
Matthew 5:27-30
The Master speaks and we listen.
In today’s Gospel, we have to pay particular attention because Jesus talks about consequences of our actions or inactions that can lead to hell.
Let us peer deeper past the literal meaning of Christ’s words because we know here He is using parabolic expressions to speak to us – particularly when He talks about cutting off the hand and plucking out the eye.
So what actually do these expressions mean?
Jesus is telling us that no matter how attached we are we things, personalities, character, attitudes, behaviours, people, etc. If any of these should be a constant source of sin in our lives, then we need to decisively separate ourselves from them all to follow Christ.
In order words if there is anything in my life that will separate me from God in the next life (Eternal Life), then it is better that in this world I suffer temporal loss of those things than suffer an eternal loss of being removed from the Presence of God.
This is no joke.
We should ask the Holy Spirit to stir up a complete discomfort in our lives and shake off completely anything in our hearts, lives and situations that would ever stand in the way of us living eternally with God.
There is no other purpose to life – than to ultimately make Eternal Life! That is where perfect joy abounds.
What would have been the point of living in joy in this world for a short while, only to suffer in eternity, forever?
May God in His infinite mercy, remove such calamity from us in Jesus Name. Amen!
So today, brethren, let’s wake up anew to the new life that the Holy Spirit of God brings us.
He comes to remind us of all Christ Jesus has said.
The Spirit of God comes in Power to anoint us and break every chain of bondage in our lives, so that relying on His Power we can live as children of the Living God.
Prayer
Come Holy Spirit of God!
Come now, come as You wish.
We need Your Presence, Your mercy, Your deliverance and faithfulness.
Stir us up with Your Living Fire to blaze in us and blaze from us everything that is displeasing to our God.
Anoint us with Your sevenfold gifts and saturate our lives with fruits that come from Your Holy Power.
Come Holy Spirit, cultivate the land and field and soil of my soul, and my life.
That my life may flourish and greatly bear fruit pleasing and delightful for the Master’s eating.
Amen!
