Rise and walk

Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.”
Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked. – John 5: 8 – 9

Reflection

Today’s reading from Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Lent, talk a lot about healing.

In the first reading from Ezekiel 47, the angel of God, takes Ezekiel through the gates of the temple, and show him water flowing from the east side of the temple.

This water eventually turns into a river and when Ezekiel tries to wade through, he is not able to.

The angel of God then sits Ezekiel on the bank of the river, which is covered on both sides by lush fruit bearing trees.

The angel informs Exekiel that “wherever the river flows, life teams in abundance.”

The same in the Gospel today, Jesus entered into the temple and was by the healing pool of Bethseda.

There by the pool, he saw a man who had been lame for 38 years.

Jesus asks the man if he wants to be healed, and when the man responds that he has no one to help him, get into the healing pool, Jesus commands him to pick up his mat and walk.

At once, the man is healed, and picks up his mat and walks.

In our present time, we receive the grace of God’s healing through the river of life flowing from Christ’s pierced side.

In John 7: 38 – 39, Jesus called out in the temple, for whoever is thirsty to come to Him, and for whoever believes in Him to drink from the river that flows out from within Him.

This St John tells us that Jesus said, referring to the Holy Spirit.

Indeed, Jesus is the Living Temple of God upon Whom we are all built into as living temples of the Holy Spirit,

So today, as we meditate on the Living Water that flows from Christ’s side – and its power to heal, let us pray for healing graces upon ourselves, our family, God’s Church and our world.

Amen.
