Jesus blessed and broke bread

So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further,

but they constrained him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them.

When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him

Luke 24:28-31

The gospel reading recounts Jesus meeting with two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus.

The disciples were leaving Jerusalem, broken hearted.

They felt like they had lost their Saviour to death and though women from their company had informed them about Jesus’ resurrection, they still did not believe.

Jesus had to instruct them again about the scriptures and all the prophecies about His life, death and resurrection.

As He spoke to them, their hearts burned within them – and yet still, they didn’t recognise Him.

It was only after Jesus had blessed and broken bread with them, that their eyes were opened.

And then, He vanished from their sight!

This is so astonishing.

These are men that knew Jesus as God while He walked and lived among them.

And even though He reappeared to them and was instructing them, they still didn’t recognise or know Him.

It was only through the power of grace that they recognised Him as they ate with Him…but not just any food, they ate the blessed and broken bread from the Hands of their Messiah.

They ate the Bread of Life!

Indeed the blessed and broken bread is the same Eucharist that we Christians receive from the hands of Christ.

His bread that He gives us to eat is truly His Body as He said, each time we do this in remembrance of Him.

When we partake of the LORD’s meal at Mass, our eyes are opened as we receive graces working directly within us that cannot be resisted.

The power of God’s Divine Life fills us so that we no longer live but Christ, He lives in us.

O today, let us praise God for His glorious gift of the Eucharist as we enter deeper and deeper into His love.

Prayer

Holy Father, thank You for the anointing in Your Son Jesus Christ that fills our hearts with His redeeming love.

We say that You are holy and there’s none like You in all the heavens and the earth.

Today as we prostrate ourselves under Your mighty powers we ask You to fill us with the life of Your Son Jesus Christ.

In all the tabernacles throughout the world and in all the Masses from the rising of the sun, to its setting today (and forever) we worship You Triune God!

Take all our adoration, worship and praise now and forever.

Give us Your Life LORD, that we might live and know You as YOU truly are.

Amen.

Always & Forever,

To the Lamb,

With all my ❤
