And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the village; and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands upon him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see men; but they look like trees, walking.” Then again he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and saw everything clearly.Mark 8:23-25
The restoration power of Jesus!
In today’s gospel reading, we meditate upon Jesus’ healing of a blind man.
I find it intriguing that Jesus lay His hands upon the man twice before He fully recovered his sight.
Surely the LORD was able to heal the man at his first touch, so why did it take two for him to be healed?
Maybe the answer lies in Jesus’ desire to have the blind man walk and work with him to receive his sight.
After Jesus’ first healing action, He asks the man, “what do you see?” This required the man to look and observe.
The man responded that he saw men who looked like trees walking.
Then Jesus perfected His sight by laying His hands on him again.
Sometimes Jesus leads us through incremental healing.
Perhaps He does this so that we are not immediately overwhelmed by His immeasurable blessings towards us as He transforms us from one state to another.
We can consider it as some form of gear change. From gears 1 to 6 is a rapid shift. So perhaps the LORD puts in a gear 4 as a significant step up for us before he takes us up to gear 6.
I recall the rapper Stormzy said this of his own life about being transformed from a life of street living and violence to riches as being a rapid gear shift.
In our own lives, what vision do we need from the LORD?
How are we lacking in sight?
Today is our day of grace to ask the LORD – in fact cry out! – to the LORD to heal us!
Let us not be silent but cling unto His Word that has come to us today of His healing power over sight and vision. And let us run with His Word to receive our complete healing from Him.
Most Holy LORD Jesus, today I run to You!
