But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman sorely troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD.
1 Samuel 1:15
Hannah was the mother of the prophet Samuel who anointed David as king.
Prior to conceiving Samuel, Hannah was barren and the wife of Elkanah.
Her husband had another wife who had both sons and daughters and the second wife mocked Hannah for being barren.
So when the family visited Shiloh to worship at God’s temple, Hannah took her cause of great distress to the LORD.
The Bible says she prayed fervently in her heart with her mouth moving but no words were heard.
Eli taught she was drunk and her response to Eli was that she was not drunk, but deeply distressed and was pouring out her soul to the LORD.
This phrase “pouring out my soul to the LORD” makes me ponder about the efficacy of prayer.
Today, let us pray for this unique gift of prayer – the kind that made Hannah’s so efficacious that her request was answered and she conceived a son – a man who was a mighty prophet of God.
Indeed when we come before the LORD in prayer it has to be about us pouring out our souls to Him. In worship, in praise, in thanksgiving, in petition, in love, in unity with His Holy Spirit.
