Asking for a sign

The crowds got even bigger and he addressed them, ‘This is an evil generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah.

Luke 11:29

Jesus was frustrated with people who only wanted to see signs and didn’t take the core of the Gospel message to heart.

The signs they craved was to justify their curiosity and not necessarily to convict their hearts that He was the Son of God.

It was just like Herod, whom the Bible records was keen to see Jesus because he hoped to see Him perform one of His miracles (a.k.a. signs – Luke 23:7–15).

This is startling!

The same Herod who was fascinated with John the Baptist, killed him; and this same Herod who was fascinated with Jesus, had Him scourged and mocked by his soldiers.

It shows that hearing the Word of God alone isn’t sufficient but we must allow God’s Word to change us.

Jesus gave examples of this with the Queen of Sheba and the people of Nineveh.

They encountered the power of God working through Solomon and Jonah and their hearts were convicted of the truth and they turned their lives around for the glory of God.

Prayer

LORD Jesus Christ please forgive me for the times that I have hardened my heart towards You.

You are God Most High and You alone are worthy of worship.

I surrender my life to You and I believe that You will guide me in all my ways and give me the grace to follow You day by day.

Amen.
