On the tenth of this month every one of your families
must procure for itself a lamb, one apiece for each household.
If a family is too small for a whole lamb,
it shall join the nearest household in procuring one
and shall share in the lamb…
The lamb must be a year-old male and without blemish…

Reflection

Today the Christian world starts celebrating the three most holy days of the year, which is called the Easter triduum, that culminate with the Easter celebration.

Holy Thursday as today is called, is the day when Jesus celebrated the Passover Supper with His disciples.

For Christians and in particular Catholics, today is celebrated as our Passover – when Christ fulfilled the Passover foreshadowed in the Old Testament as reflected in the reading from the book of Exodus.

Jesus by instituting the New Covenant and giving His disciples His Body and Blood, was offering His life to His disciples (throughout all generations) as the Lamb of God.

He alone is the Lamb without blemish as He was completely sinless.

He is the One Lamb that can be ‘shared’ as an atonement sacrifice by all the Household of God.

Indeed this entire site is dedicated to the Lamb of God, Who was slain and Holy Thursday is when we see this fulfillment begin to take place, with its ultimate completion on Good Friday.

Again today is a day for silent contemplation as we move into Good Friday.

Imagine that you are one of the disciples with the Lord today as He celebrates the Passover Supper, and gives His Body and Blood. What would you think?

When He mentions that one of His disciples would betray Him, how do you feel?

At the point He wraps a towel on His waist and begins to wash your feet, what reaction do you have?

This indeed is our God – the Servant King… The Passover Lamb of God… The Messiah.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, today we proclaim that You are our Passover Lamb.

As we celebrate Holy Thursday in all the Masses and services throughout the world this day, come to us Lord and make Your home in us.

Change our hearts and minds, that we may be delivered from sin and willingly walk before Your presence.

We need Your mercy, the cleansing of Your Blood and the redemption of our souls that can only come through Your saving work as our Passover Lamb.

Thank You Lord for Your redeeming love.
