“He must increase, but I must decrease.”

John 3:30

Today’s Gospel reading from John 3:22-30 is a narrative between St John the Baptist and his disciples.

The Lord Jesus and His disciples were baptising people in Judea and when John’s disciples were informed of this, they took it up with John.

To them it seemed like a kind of competition, they didn’t understand why the Lord’s ministry should also involve baptising.

However John made it very clear to them that his main mission was to prepare the way for the Messiah (Christ) and that he himself was not the Christ.

He went on to explain that Jesus is the bridegroom that has the right to the bride (the Church).

Most importantly, John let’s his disciples know that now is the time for Jesus and His ministry to reign and become known, whilst he John fades into the background.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ help me to decrease while You increase.

Lord I bring a matter before You that I know grieves Your heart and I ask that You be consoled as we talk this through together and pour out Your grace of repentance and healing upon Your Church.

Lord Jesus, we have gone astray.

We have glorified ourselves.

We have forgotten the path of John and have made disciples for ourselves in Your Body, The Church.

The reports we hear in the news stinks of abuse of power and pride and self-corruption. And we are ashamed!

Forgive us Lord, heal us Lord.

Rather than strive to be one as You and the Father are one, we strive to make personal disciples.

Lord heal us.

Lord set us on the straight path again.

God teach us to lay down ourselves before You, so that only You may reign and have the right to Your Bride…no one else!

Show us the path that leads to truth so that You may increase and we decrease!
